Carolyn Sakal passed away peacefully at Hospice of Miami County in Troy, Ohio on August 31, 2023 at the age of 80 from complications caused by strokes.

She is survived by her daughter Kimberly Corwin (Tom) of Portland, Maine, son Michael Sakal of Union, granddaughter Kate Corwin-Olson (Jonathan) of New Hampshire, grandson Ben Corwin of Portland, Maine, and sister Alene Edwards (Vandalia).

She also is survived by her longtime companion and friend, Gene Flaugher of New Lebanon and his sons Scott (Andrea) Flaugher, Michael (Becky) Flaugher, grandchildren, great grandchildren and family as well as Carolyn’s sisters-in-law Rosie Poppaw of Miamisburg and Jani (Glenn) Kreitzer of Florida and numerous nieces and nephews.

Carolyn was preceded in death by her husband Joseph Sakal in 1995, parents, Dan and Anna Mae Angel, mother-in-law Anna Szakal, sister Geneva Davis, brothers Eugene (Doris) Angel and Donald Angel, and brother-in-law Kenny Edwards.

A native of Dayton, Ohio and a member of Roth High School’s Class of 1961 and former member of the West Milton United Church of Christ and West Milton Lioness Club, Carolyn was very active throughout her life. She loved being with family and friends, traveling, frequenting antique and thrift stores, decorating for Christmas, reading and trivia.

She had worked at such places as Delphi Automotive Systems (1997 to 2007), Patterson’s Florist in West Milton, AAA, and Shopsmith. However, her favorite job that she truly loved was working as a “Santa Helper” at the Rike’s Department Store’s Santa Land in downtown Dayton during the 1960s and early 1970s.

Carolyn will be very missed by all who knew and loved her, but her presence and spirit always will be felt.

The family would like to thank the great people of Hospice of Miami County for the care and comfort they provided to “Carol” during the end of her life.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 7 at the Hale-Sarver Family Funeral Home, 284 N. Miami St, West Milton. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM on Friday, Sept. 8 at the West Milton United Church of Christ, 108 S. Main St, West Milton. Flowers are welcome as Carolyn loved flowers, but any monetary contributions are asked to be made to Hospice of Miami County in Troy, Ohio.
