Sondra Jean Dewey, age 83, of Englewood, passed away on Monday, December 30, 2024, at Hospice of Dayton. She was born August 21, 1941, to Kenneth James & Margaret Ann (Rogers) Vance in Dayton, Ohio.
She is preceded in death by her parents and brother Roger Vance. She will be missed and remembered by her loving husband Willard W. Dewey of 65 years; children John Dewey (Mary), Cynthia Dewey, Willard W. Dewey III (Christine); grandchildren Elise Harkey (Brad), John Dewey Jr (Alexis), Thomas Dewey, Joseph Dewey, James Smith-Dingler (Amy), Molly Smith, Margaret Dewey, Willard W. Dewey IV; 4 great-grandchildren; and sisters Mary Vance and Shirley Loeber.
Sondra led a life of faith, loyalty, and candor. She often spoke of her humble beginnings attending Catholic school, but not in a righteous way. She’d tell you her favorite prayer is the Hail Mary, and in the same breath, you’d learn she snuck beer past the nuns on her senior trip to New York. She was whip-smart, never shy to speak her mind, and a natural caretaker, always on your side.
She loved many things—among them, writing, golfing, cooking, playing a game of 500 Rummy at the dining table—but it was the ways in which she loved them that was so distinctly Sondra. When pen and paper slowed her down, she learned Excel to organize a women’s golf league. She was the queen of the kitchen, each dish a tradition, and if you borrowed the crown, she still ruled from the living room. She played cards and dominoes with quick wit and fervor only she could possess, leaving her opponents in stitches.
Above all, she loved her family—lending an ear for every woe, concocting the best remedies for illness, and expanding the kids’ palates (donuts were known as Grandma’s bagels). And of course, she loved her husband. Since age 18, she nurtured an incredible marriage with devotion, humor, and the occasional expletive. Her children and grandchildren see Sondra and Willard’s union as the gold standard, and the way in which she loved him will live on in each of their hearts.
A celebration of Sondra’s life will be held from 2:30 – 4:00pm on Saturday, February 22nd at the Hale House Event Center, 320 N. Miami St, West Milton (adjacent the parking lot of Hale-Sarver Family Funeral Home). Arrangements are in care of Hale-Sarver Family Funeral Home, West Milton. If so desired, memorial contributions may be made to Ohio’s Hospice of Dayton or Church of the Transfiguration in West Milton.
